  • Cats drop opener in Elks Lodge baseball tournament

The 2010 Elks Lodge baseball tournament did not start well for the Wildcats as they were beaten, 12-6, by the Lovejoy Leopards at hom Thursday night.

After trailing, 7-2, in the fifth inning, juniors Blake Woodson and David Bloodworth smashed home runs to cut the Leopard lead to 7-5. Senion Judson Luther added another homer in the seventh inning.

Senior Byron Burns was LH's most consistent offensive weapon, spraying base hits in each of his first three at-bats.

Burns started the game on the mound and was relieved by seniors Tim Davis and Mark Longoria.

The varsity plays Laredo Cigarroa at 1:30 p.m. Friday with the JV playing immediately after at 4 p.m. against South Grand Prairie.

  • Lady Cats ready to face Richardson, Berkner

The LHHS softball team plays Richardson tonight at home at 6 pm. The girls are on a roll, having defeated Skyline Friday and Sunset Saturday, making them 2-0 in district play.

Tomorrow they’ll get to face district-rival Berkner in a game that was scheduled for rainy Tuesday. The game was moved to Friday at noon, a bit of a bummer for the girls who’d prefer a time when their friends can pack the Berkner stands. Wildcat softball fans are encouraged to bring a brown bag lunch and cheer for the Cats, who were bi-district champions last year with only one defeat in district play.

  • Curran Events: Q&A with softball's D.J. Sandidge

D.J. Sandidge is a senior on the Lake Highlands softball team. A two-sport athlete, she also plays on the Lady Cats basketball team in addition to being a student trainer during football season.

Q: How do you work out your schedule being a two-sport athlete, and having been a football trainer?

A: Actually, it works out. Over the years doing this, I've learned to prioritize, keep long hours ton maintain my grades and run on empty. Drinking Dr Pepper helps.

Q: What are you going to be doing next year?

A: I'm playing softball and studying at Hendrix College [Conway, Ark.]. Go Warriors!

Q: Which do you enjoy more, basketball or softball?

A: Softball, I love it and it makes me happy.

  • Gymnastics team dominates district; Morrison 3-peats in all-around

    From gymnastics correspondent Tracie Salmon:

The Lake Highlands girls gymnastics team won district by an astounding margin Tuesday evening. In a sport measured by tenths, LH won with a team score of 114.575 over Highland Park's 105.850.

Sarie Morrison led the team by winning the all-around for the third year in a row in addition to winning bars and beam. Morrison tied teammate Hannah Van Meter for first on vault and LH's Kristen DeCosta won floor.

Co-captains Morrison and Van Meter took first and second in the all-around, with Morrison scoring 38.950 to Van Meter's 38.075. DeCosta was fourth with 37.550 in her first meet to compete in all events this season after being released from injury.

"Caitlin Antkowski, Lauren Patterson, Kelsey Kinney and Olivia Lewis are key teammates, challenging and assisting the team to victory," coach Addi Ledford said. "Their hard work continues to pay off."

LH advances to the regional meet, March 30-31 at Highland Park. This will be the last opportunity to cheer on the Wildcat gymnasts in an area meet. The state meet is April 14-18 in Houston.

"It's been a dicey year with injuries," Ledford said. "So we are praying for continued health for the team."

  • Boys' soccer: LHHS tops Creekview 3-1

Only one game stands between the Wildcat soccer team and a district championship. They’ll face sad sack Molina at Kincaide Stadium Friday night.

The Cats went into halftime last night tied at 0-0 but brimming with confidence. Bleachers in The Boneyard were full of rowdy fans and the team’s seniors were honored at a halftime presentation in recognition of their final season and their four years of participation. Even the weather seemed on our side with temperatures in the sixties – seemingly balmy for seasoned soccer fans.

In the second half, Reagan Dunk scored on a ball passed around the field like a pinball - a show of strong teamwork. Later Carter Bredehoeft shot and the goalkeeper bobbled it, enabling Joel Mendoza to clean it up and put it in. Finally, as seen on this video, Young Swede took a corner kick and Big Guy Abdoulaye Faly tapped it in for the 3-1 win.
