Twisted Root burgers adding SMU & Greenville location

Reading the DMN's recent story on "booting" cars in Deep Ellum made me think about Twisted Root burgers, which seems to be one of the shops punished by neighboring parking lot owners eager to tow cars the lot owners believe are illegally parked. In fact, the city — led by councilman Angela Hunt — recently passed an ordinance requiring parking lot people who use "booting" to now provide on-site receipts for parking fees paid at the lots in an attempt to reduce the number of "discussions" between the lot owners, the towing companies and patrons who claim they shoved the appropriate amount of money in the little numbered slot only to be told later there was no money there.

Anyway, I digress. The point of this post is that one of our eagle-eyed readers — Rick Casner — pointed out that Twisted Root's signs are all over the first floor of The Shelby apartment complex near the intersection of SMU Boulevard and Greenville Avenue (here's a Google street view, which shows The Shelby under construction), and it appears the burger place will be opening there sometime in 2010. We have a call into the management to find out more about the new location, and we'll give you the details when we get them.

In the meantime, you might check out The Shelby's website (linked above and pictured here). It looks like a pretty nice place, and it's located directly across the street from the post office there. At one time, the street was basically home to older-looking low-rise office buildings and funky SMU-oriented bars, but if you haven't been down the street lately, The Shelby is setting a distinctly tonier tone.

  • If you look at the painting on the Web site, you'd never know that "The Shelby" is shoe-horned in between the vet clinic on one side and the railroad tracks on the other. Hilarious. What with dozens of barking dogs and three or four trains an hour, all those toney residents will be lucky to hear themselves think. And I'm still wondering where they (and now all those burger lovers) are going to park.

  • My husband and I drove by the Shelby recently, and also noticed the DART tracks right next to the complex. Unless that place was built with soundproof walls, I'm guessing the noise is a problem for residents. The streets around it, however (Dyer and Yale) are starting to have some fun shops and such, and if there was an extra DART stop between Lovers and Mockinbird, it would probably develop into an even more interesting walk-around area.

  • The burgers at nearby Milo Butterfield's are a heck of alot better than those at Twisted Root, which is becoming a chain restaurant.

No doubt TRB will be successful, but only because many consumers are attracted to hype and gimmicks.

I urge readers of the Advocate to give Milo's a try and you be the judge. Milo's has been around for decades, is independently owned/operated, and the owner is often seen on-site, making sure the place runs well and customers are happy.
