Weekend roundup: A speed trap, Central Market renovations, and a scholarship winner

• At 8 a.m. on Saturday, a Dallas police car was at Matilda, a couple of blocks south of Stonewall Jackson, radar gun at the ready. I haven't seen that speed trap before (though I was, of course, doing the speed limit and was in no danger). We will continue to be vigilant in our speed trap sightings.

• You know that side parking lot at the Central Market at Lovers and Greenville, the one that empties on Matilda? It's closed until the fall, part of the store's summer-long renovation. This is the first makeover since Central Market opened five years ago. The wine department isn't losing any space, but I'm told there might be a couple of significant changes elsewhere. The grocery section, between wine and the frozen food, has already been rearranged, and it took me an extra five minutes to find the canned tuna.

• Congratulations to Elizabeth Canelakes of J.L. Long, who won a $2,500 college scholarship in the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation competition. Her classmate, Sam Hendrix, was a finalist, no mean achievement either. The two students were chosen from more than 35,000 eighth-graders from across the Metroplex -- and there were just 192 finalists and 36 scholarship winners. Elizabeth is the daughter of my favorite tavern owner, who will no doubt be relieved to know that he has other options to pay for college. Depending on me, as well as my colleagues at Louie's, is a hit and miss proposition.
