You can tell a lot about a person by browsing his iPod play list. In essence, music is a part of our identity. It has the power to put us in a certain mindset — and at times, even help us reach higher levels of spirituality. This very topic will be the theme of an upcoming lecture by C. Michael Hawn, an SMU church music professor and the Master of Sacred Music director at Perkins School of Theology, and Simon Sargon, an SMU professor of music at the Meadows School of the Arts and the former director of music at Temple Emanu-El. Following the lecture will be a concert of spiritually inspired songs. The performance is presented by Voces Intimae, a nonprofit dedicated to art songs or poetry set to music. These art songs are performed in a chamber setting so audiences can be physically and emotionally closer to the music. This concert, “Spirituality in the Art Song,” will feature works like Copland’s “Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson”, Holst’s “Vedic Hymns”, and Native American hymntunes. The lecture will be Saturday, Nov. 8, at 4:15 p.m. and the concert will start at 5 p.m.
